and then in connecticut. so we whir worried. and it's scary because it was happening school after school. it is very scary. >>reporter: the parents also have to wait quite a while to collect their children. there was a long line of parents and i can tell you that a spokesperson said that this was a precaution. just to make sure that everybody is okay. reportingscott rates is live at john f kennedy middle school. >>pam: thank you, scott. developing news tonight. a shooting on a south bay freeway. sky-7 hd, abc 7 news. this closed the complete not far away, but un-related to the freeway shooting, a pre-school was locked down for several hours this afternoon. this is video from sky-7 hd, abc 7 news. the 'good samaritan' preschool near cupertino village, and the surrounding neighborhood, was cordoned off amid a manhunt

for a burglary suspect. kron four's rob fladeboe has the latest on the search. and how it made for some anxious moments at the pre- school. >>reporter: as the manhunt for one suspect played out up the street, parents arrived to pick up their kids at the locked down good samaritan pre-school, many saying they couldn't help school shooting. >> i know that my child is going to be safe and that the staff will take care of them. but after last week's event is a bit unnverving.. if you have a comment or story idea for stanley, you can email us at peoplebehavingbadly@kron4.co m the pre school was locked down after sunnyvale police stopped this car for speeding on south wolf road. based on evidence found in it's occupants may be burglaries. >> the vehicle pulled over and sped off again. near wolfe road and the three occupants fled the vehicle when it came to stop. >>reporter: two of the three suspects were chased down and caught while a 3rd escaped into a nearby residential area. teams of police and could be

seen going through the neighborhood home by home. resident nick zaveri was worried about his family. 33rd >> i am alarmed at my wife is by herself so i want to make sure that she is okay. >>reporter: there was no evidence the suspects were armed but police were taking no chances and sealed off the area for much of the afternoon. once the area near the pre school was swept, the all-clear was given and not a minute too soon for anguished parents. >> it was a stressful day i'd like to get my children home, thank you very much. >>reporter: in cupertino rob fladeboe lron 4 news >>pam: gun control taking center state stage. as more victims are laid to rest in the deadly elementary school 20 children were among the victims in the massacre. this evening -- we have complete coverage -- the reaction from washington. to the bay area. along with what's being done here in california.

but first tonight -- president obama -- promising action. grant lodes is here with more. >> president obama is talking tough after the mass shooting that we just saw. today,mister obama took the podium this morning with vice president joe biden at his side. the president.talking tough on the need to reduce gun voilence.especially mass shootings like the one we just saw. today we learned the vice president will lead a task force that will present a set of gun control recommendations to the president. >> it is encouraging of all backgrounds are willing to challenge and change longstanding positions. that conversation has to continue but this time those words need to lead to action. the point that this is complex no longer is an excuse for doing nothing. the fact that we cannot prevent every act of violence does not mean that we will steadily reduce

the violence. and prevent the very worst violence. that is why i have a past vice president to lead members of my cabinet and outside organizations to come up with a set of concrete all lines with proposals that i intend to push without delay. the good news is that there is a growing sense this. the majority of americans would prohibit the sale of high capacity ammunition rounds, and assault rifles. and support laws for background checks before all sales. it will take a wave of americans, sons, daughters, law enforcement, mental health professionals and yes, the gun owners standing up and saying enough is enough. on behalf of

children. that we would say that this is terrible, a tragedy. and we do not have the sustained attention span and to be able to get this done over the next several months. it does not make sense. >> this is not the only issue about gun violence. where have you been? >> here is where you been, jake typing the president of the night states. and working since the worst of the great depression working as a president of the not states. i do not think that i've been on vacation. and i have been no president of the united states. we all have to do some reflections. i have-been working as the president of the united states--. this is something we have not seen. any other. said as soon as he gets the recommendations from the task force - he will make

very specific proposals. which could address mental meanwhile sales of assault rifles at gun shops. continue to soar in the wake of the connecticut elementary school shooting >>pam: gun racks are practically bare at "j and r" sports supply in livermore where today the owner of the gun shop told kron4, why he strongly disagrees with president obama's move. to create new gun restrictions >>pam: already? >> there is already broad restrictionsinstead of broad gun restrictions. the owner of the gun store says, the government should focus on better ways to prevent the mentally ill from accessing firemarms >> in california there's already a restriction on meantime. creating a limit on high- capacity ammunition clips. is the next issue some in congress want to look at.

some have 20, 30 but we are already on the restriction of 10 round magazines. these laws do little from stopping from causing harm. what they would do is stopping people from defending themselves properly. the president is surrounded by secret service. if he truly wanted to lead by example and and stop using the secret service to protect them. >> instead of broad gun restrictions the owner says of the government should focus on better ways to prevent and prevent the mentally ill from accessing firearms. and also now kron 4's justine waldman is here with the " immediate action". being called for. justine? , many of the elected officials are saying that there is enough pollack is no time to do something.

michigan governor rick snyder vetoed legislation that would have allowed concealed weapons to be carried in churches, the measure had strong snyder said friday's tragedy played a role in his decision. florida's governor rick scott has been well supported by the n-r-a. he'd legislative change. >> "i support the second amendment. i believe in the second amendment, but look, what i want to focus on right now is the families, make sure our states, our schools are safe." >>reporter: a c-n-n o-r-c poll released today indicates that more americans are in favor of gun control. 52-percent of people polled say they favor major restrictions on guns. with 46-percent saying they oppose. coming up tonight at 5-30. michael yaki will be here to but first -- we want to know what you think. california. kron4's terisa estacio is here with the story. after

some of the most restrictive in the kron four's terisa estacio has been covering that part of the story today. and joins us live in the studio. who is behind some of these new proposals. >> there are active senate members. with tougher gun laws in the state. he is proposing legislation that would ban the vices of ammunition that would be a are reloaded quickly that semi-automatics but also fire kind of like an assault weapon. here are some other proposals that are being considered. to crack down on sales of ammunition, registration requirements and gun law mandates. one state lawmen and says that he wants new legislation that has had serious mental health to banned the sale and blocked them from ever obtaining a fire or more. >> they are proposing that we close a loophole in california law that would be

adjudicated in court. somebody that was violent or mentally ill. would prevent that individual from asking the court to bear arms in the future. for that individual. if that a violent background with a combination of mental illness will not have the right to bear arms in any capacity in the future. >> the senator will be here and he will sit down and talk to us about of the charge that he is putting forward. one thing that a lot of people want to know is that there is been a lot of talk is this going to lead to legislation? we will have more coming up at 8:00 p.m. >> terisa, the fuelthank-you -- >>pam: it's been nearly 20 years since a mass shooting inside a san francisco high rise inspired the last

federal ban on assault weapons. back in july 1993.a former client of a law firm inside 101 california street went on a killing spree. nine people including the gunman died. six were wounded. the killer was armed with a handgun and two tech nine assault pistols. the federal ban that came out of that tragedy expired in 2004. today a survivor of that shooting spoke to kron4's maureen kelly about the massacre in newtown and the renewed push for stricter country. >> i was sitting in the office on california street and they said that there is somebody on a 34 with a gun and he is shooting. my secretary warned me. >>reporter: sheldon siegal worked at the law firm targeted by the gunman .and lost many friends and collegues that day. he says the massacre at sandy hook elementary brings up those painful memories from nearly 20 years ago. >> what is disappointing to me is we are 20 years

removed and it is still happening. and it is happening more frequently now and it is seen to be accepting. as the regular course of events and that is a huge failure! >>reporter: after the incident at 101 california sheldon and other survivors formed the law center to prevent gun violence. tuesday they wrote this letter to the president obama urging stronger gun control lawsincluding the reinstatment of the federal ban on assault weapons. >> i have been in a building that was under attack if that ever happens again i hope that there is less of a chance for a person that might knock on my door and it will able to shoot 30 rounds%. >>reporter: he hopes that the mass murders in conneticutserves as the tipping point to move this country in a safer direction. >> somebody killer in 21st graders somebody telling them in a safe community in connecticut that tested get somebody going? if that does

not do it, i do not know what would. >>reporter: maureen kelly kron4 news. >>catherine: for the third straight day - funeral processions were rolling through newtown, connecticut. more of the victims of friday's shooting at a grade school. among th 7-year-old boy and victoria soto. she's the 27-year-old teacher being remembered for dying while trying to shield her students them managed to escape. also today - a medical examiner says he's looking for genetic clues as to why the gunman - adam lanza - killed 20 children and 6 adults at the school. authorities want to know if there's any identifiable disease associated with his behavior. more on the shooting - and the fallout concerning gun control - still ahead. >>jacqueline: already 43 in vallejo it is going to be chilly, overnight. there is a storm to the north with

uncontrolled. >>pam: this is a slippery slope. for the will that do not want restrictions. >> i think that is going to be a difficult portion of the debate. if you look at the united states and comparison with other countries the one thing that is different is the guns. the availability and access of guns. >> what do think is most likely to happen? with that the types of magazine clips, or the types of guns. several things are being proposed and joe biden is putting something together for the review of the president. >> there could be an expansion of assault weapons. with 900 exceptions. >> that is that senator feinstein has and exceptions. with 900 guns. >> that is going to be something whether or not and the high-capacity magazines. clearly, it is going to be

on semi-automatic weapons. that seems that no matter what, with technology gotten so good on semi-automatic weapons. it does not matter if there is 30, 50, they can load and unload in a split second and that is what causes the carnage. >> and a lot of people waiting to hear if you'd like to connect with michael yaki. he is on twitter. catherine? school shooting. >> we're now only two weeks on one hand.the president is saying he and house speaker john boehner are "pretty close" to a deal. on the other hand.there's talk of a plan "b" -- and lots of public squabbling. the president is telling congressional republicans to get back to the bargaining table. saying the two sides are far too close to a deal to give

up now. meantime - house speaker john boehner and other gop leaders are frantically trying to gather support for a fallback plan -- "plan b". it would extend bush-era tax cuts for everyone earning less than one million dollars a year. both sides sound frustrated. both sides - blaming the other for the 11th hour >> they keep on finding ways to say " no " instead of " saying yes ". it is very difficult for them to say yes to me. >>catherine: in response.boehner held a news conference that lasted one minute. >> tomorrow the house will pass legislation permanent tax relief for nearly every american 99.8% of the american people. and that the president will have a decision to make. he can call on the senate democrats to pass that bill or he can be responsible for the largest tax increase in american history. >>catherine: with that - he walked off. republicans have scheduled a vote on 'plan b' - for

thursday. it would head off there has been some movement this week. the president has offered house republicans a plan that would raise taxes on americans earning more than $400-thousand dollars.up from 200-thousand. he says 'take the deal.' the clock is ticking toward december 31st - with boehner saying he has not giving up on talks with the president. and at least one lawmaker is trying to sound optimistic. >> "darkest before the dawn.more like than not" >>catherine: everybody is hoping to sell. a deal doesn't seem to be all that close. boehner may not have the votes to move his 'plan b' through the house. and the white house is saying it would veto that >>pam: the 49ers have just two games left in the regular season. .and as big as last sunday's game with new england was, this next one might be even bigger. kron four's jason appelbaum joins me now.

a suspect search is underway tonight. after a shooting on a south bay freeway in cupertino closed down the southbound highway- 85. here's video from sky 7 h-d a-b-c news. you can see the backup and the car that was hit by gunfire.. kron 4's alecia reid is live in cupertino with the latest -- alecia, we hear the victim is a marine recruiter. who was in the car when it was hit multiple times. >> the shots barely missed them a with right across his stomach. he was really, really lucky. with a rear windows blown out. >> the car was had a number of times but he does not know how many times was shot at. investigators are of the hunt for people or people responsible and a motive for the shooting. >> they'd left the gas station. and there were coming down the freeway. the nearest they could determine if somebody pulled alongside and started shooting. >>reporter: they are still

investigating this shooting anybody that is seen anything is urged to call the sheriff's office. reporting live, cupertino, alecia reed, kron 4. >>pam: police in sunnyvale have burglary suspect. the incident resulted in a school being locked down in the area. teams of officers with dogs, scoured a neighborhood off homestead road near cupertino village. for one been of three suspects in connection with some recent home burglaries. two other men were arrested after a brief chase. as a precaution, the good samaritan church preschool was locked down for several hours. the church pastor says, the never in any danger, but says, parents were nonetheless relieved >> we are trying to protect all the children and let the parents know that everything was okay and the children were safe. maintaining communication with the sheriff's department. we had to cancel afternoon class. we have had students and teachers, and and turn them

have political analyst, michael yaki. this heated issue. new gun control laws weapons while they still can it has been nearly 20 years since a mass shooting inside a san francisco high rise. inspired the last federal back in july 1993. a former client of a law firm inside 101 -california street. went on a killing spree. nine people including the gunman died. six were wounded. the killer was armed with a handgun and two tech nine assault pistols. the federal ban that came out of that tragedy. expired in 2004. today, a survivor of that shooting spoke to kron4's maureen kelly about the massacre in newtown, and the renewed push for stricter gun control laws in this country. >> i was sitting in my office on the 36 floor on one, california. my secretary said that there is somebody on the party fourth

stored in a drawer. after noticing a small puddle on the floor, employees were directly affected. employees began experiencing irritation. the pepper spray has been cleaned up, and the post office reopened at around 11:35 a-m the third consecutive day, a funeral processions are pushing through connecticut. after the deadly elementary school shooting. rolling through newtown, connecticut after last fridays deadly elementary school shooting. that shooting killed 26 people including 20 children. three of those children are being buried today. along with one teacher. four people are being laid to rest today. three children and one teacher. victoria soto. she is the 27-year-old being hailed as a hero for dying students, some of whom managed to escape. that shooting is prompting schools across the country to beef up security. in florida, the orange county commission approved a proposal to put armed deputies at each of the county's 78 elementary schools. there are already deputies assigned to each middle and high school in the county. school officials want the new policy implemented by the time students return to school after the holiday break in early january.

a plan that seems to be easing the fears of some parents. >> you know, we can't keep them safe from everything, but i think the schools, they're here as much time as they are, have a responsibility to try and protect them to the best that they can. >>pam: it will cost orange county up to 3-million- dollars to get the deputies into the elementary schools. anxious parents are also driving up sales of armored backpacks for children. a utah company called second amendment says sales of their bulletproof backpacks are skyrocketing after the connecticut school shooting. the backpacks are lined with a light material that can stop handgun rounds. the backpacks retail from one-hundred-50 to three- hundred dollars. >> governor jerry brown has picked jeffrey beard , a retired corrections chief from pennsylvania to help restructure california's prison system.
